Patricia Dauder: Terra Incógnita

at Arquipelago Centro de Artes Contemporaneas, São Miguel Island, Azores (Summer 2017)

We present a selection of the new drawings made by Patricia Dauder during her artistic residence at Terra Incógnita. This set of works invites us to reflect on time, on the idea of space and on the maritime history of the Azorean islands. Her drawings are the result of long working processes, and of an accurate observation of her surroundings. IDauder has always been interested in the maritime environment and culture, and, on her daily walks on the beach of Santa Bárbara, she took in all the elements of the landscape — from the most immediate, the materials washed up by the sea on the sand, to the farthest skyline.

Her drawings are slow processes of adding and removing, accretion and erasure, background and form, light and dark — elements that are always present in her work. The artist leads us to a remote place. Layer by layer, fragment by fragment, shape by shape, she transports us into her idea of island as a geography, a history, and a mental state.
